The War Against Cliche

August 9, 2011

OVER AT FULL STOP they have provided an excellent way to decode cliches in book reviews.

Take for example their assessment of the meaning of “flawed” in book reviews…

flawed: this book is similar to the book I was planning to write.

…compared with a review I wrote about Kenneth Slawenski’s recent J.D. Salinger biography:

a full, yet deeply flawed, portrait of the artist.

See? Read the whole piece and you’ll be uncovering cliches like it was your dayjob.
